Forever - The New TattooVol. 2

Above mainstream tattoo, there is underground tattoo and a tattoo that inspires to improve the bounds of Art. This gender is the one which is explored into Forever the new Tattoo 2. Innovative, plural, controversial, the selection of tattooists is well diverse and represents a new mass appeal to tattoo. As the motives they create, those tattooists are the New Tattoo and they share it in this deeper and instructive documentation of 240 pages.

A selected range of innovators are gathered and even if some are still missing, we are glad to see wild spirits such as Indomito, Duncan X, Ruco or Pietro Sedda are included in this book. As this book is related to contemporary tattoo, we go through contemporary art such as punk and fine line with Clare Frances and the geometrical art and body art experimentation created by Chaim Machlev. Fresh styles mostly which is a unique and inspired choice but the book also explores strong art, fashion and visual culture inspirations whom nourish those artists.

Some traditional tattoos are included too but always with a new shape or a surprising way to twist it. Mostly Europeans but not only, we noticed Lionel Fahy and Sad Amish figured in that selection as representatives of this new tattoo. What's most interesting in that book then, is how visual art can speak to us and then how texts and articles wrote by the well-known Art Historian Matt Loder and the Australian writer Freed Kaviani can immerse us into the intimacy and private knowledge of those tattooists.

As Lodder said in the preface, reintroducing tattooing into an historical context, tattoo is « As Ancient as Time As Modern as Tomorrow » (a quote that was actually found on several circus and sideshows back then), tattooing is always evolving and is melted into that paroxysm of past, present and future. That's what creates this sensational opening space of imagination, visual culture and profound self-expression.Unlike other forms of art, tattoos transcend their time. They cannot be hung up on a wall or tied up in a backyard. In contrary to others genders, they have a time time.

This book is a reflection around tattooing that make you ask yourself many questions. In addition to those quality visuals and those art imagery, Forever the New Tattoo includes art of Liam Sparkes, Yann Black, Valentin Hirsch, Isaiah Toothtaker, Duncan X and more unique artists.

« You Won't Regret That Tattoo » : older but tattooed Text : Tiphaine Deraison / Visuels : Angie Bird

"Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and they all stink!"

« I like the fact that older people do not care about other people's opinions », says Angie Bird, the australian director of « You won't regret that tattoo ». This short documentary is pointing out and argumenting the most used argument against tattooing: That you will regret it.

Who didn't hear it: « You'll regret it when you'll get older ». To fight against this preconsive idea, the publicist created her first short movie with profund human aesthetics. Gathering atypical characters - Bernice Williams, Rick Gadde, Frank Reid, Chappy, Maria Melnik, Bruce Stewart, Monica Branson - « older generation enthusiasts», trusting their doubts and intimate memories to the camera, but also their strong personality. «You won't regret that tattoo» is the assurance that we can be loyal to ink, year after year.

Angie Bird is working with personal and intimate stories of these old people to respond to the frequently asked question of regretting the tattoo once you get older. Determined to find an appropriate answer, she met Rick, Frank, Chappy and so on who are showing her that being tattooed and old is something that is absolutely fine. After four months and a lot facebook requests on different groups as « Being 40 and having fun », Angie crossed the way of Bernie, who decided to get tattooed for the first time.

What's overwhelming in these 30 minutes, except well-worked visual aesthetics of course, is that we really appreciate this intimate relationship which can be seen in between the narrator and the camera. The director's will was to reveal those profund stories, as different as they are from each others. She explains : « I like the way Bernie is telling us that women got a bigger part in society now. She always wanted to be tattoed but now she can finally allow herself to do so even though she is 68 years old ! ».

Gathering more than 120 sets of plates around the Tibetan, Thai and Hindu illustration, Shakti-7 by Jondix is without a doubt one of those compilations that you’d love to have sitting in your library. Especially when you’re a tattoo artist and admire the work of the 7 Doors tattoo’s owner in London. Internationally recognized, his small Apokryphas are already exhausted and his collaboration for collective works are no longer to count: Jondix's Art is a pearl of tattooing interpreting the oriental style as never before. The proof is there.

Jondix has examined these Hindu, Thai and Tibetan illustrations as part of a series of publications entitled "The Great Books on The Art of Tattooing" published by Tattoo Life Magazine. To describe this source of more than 1000 different subjects, from mythological creatures to subjects of everyday life, animals and ornamental figures, Jondix simply gave the name "Shakti" along with his favorite number: 7 . As he points out, in Hindi this word is the name of a certain energy which comes from nature and helping or allowing to be creative and finish what has been started. A word which sums up a lot and which does not exist in Western culture, Jondix did not want to speak of "power" alone. Iconographies made of simple black lines, this collection of flashes is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and an object gathering images with symbolism and extraordinary authenticity.
